Massachusetts Tax Attorney

The answer is yes. You have to make the decision that today is the day that you will do something about it. Dealing with the IRS is miserable, I know, because virtually all of my clients tried that route before they hired me. I am often amazed at how many good, honest, and hard working people really want to solve their debt, but then they give up when they talk to the IRS. There is a reason for that. There isn’t anybody at the IRS whose job description is to help the taxpayer. I am not being spiteful about it. This is just the way it is.

Everyday, I talk to people who have good common sense questions and approaches to solving their tax problems. Unfortunately, you are dealing with a huge bureaucracy. It is very set in its ways, with employees who have very specific roles to play. People will ask me “can I just call them and offer them a settlement?” The answer is no. There is no way to do that. There is a way to settle your debt, but you have to go through the IRS process known as Offer in Compromise, which includes filling out their forms and submitting a whole pile of documents. Other people will complain to me that “the IRS says I owe $50,000.00, but half of it is penalties, so my taxes are only $25,000.00.” The penalties can be outrages, but once the IRS slaps you with a penalty it becomes part of your tax bill. As far as they are concerned that’s the new tax that you owe.

Can you ever get rid of those penalties?

Again, the answer is yes, but there is a process you have to go through known as Penalty Abatement.

There are many more “processes” at the IRS, and there are many, many more rules and regulations to follow. Do you want to go through those processes with a big faceless company that hires so-called “tax specialist” that they put through a short training course? Or do you want to go through that process with your own tax attorney, who has years of experience dealing with the IRS and tax problems just like yours, day after day, month after month, and year after year.
